The US mint first minted pennies starting in 1793. From 1959 to 2008 the Lincoln Memorial was featured on the back to commmemorate Lincoln's 150th birthday.

From 2010 to present the US mint has issued pennies with a Union Shield design on the back to represent Lincoln's preservation of the US as a single country.


The US mint released these 2009 Lincoln Bicentennial pennies to commemorate both the 200th Anniversary of Lincoln's birth and the 100th anniversary of the Lincoln cent.

Sacagawea Gold Dollars were minted to honor Native Americans' contributions to American History. The obverse featuries a portrait of Sacagawea with her child on her back, and the inverse features various designs honoring Native peoples. Gold Dollars are not real gold, instead made of copper, manganese, zinc and nickel.

Presidential Gold Dollars were minted to honor each US President. Gold coins have also been minted commemorating the First Ladies, however these are much rarer due to low mintages and less interest among collectors at the time. The inverse features the Statue of Liberty.
